As Robson Stannard Pleases…

We got to know artist Robson Stannard a little better as he was given free rein over our windows.

Artist Robson Stannard has given the rose that gives us our name his signature fashion-illustration twist, painting it across our store windows in London. We got to know him a little better as he worked.

How would you describe your work / style?

Painterly, colourful and abstract.

Your work is gestural and almost abstract — how do you decide how much detail to include and what to leave out?

With my Fashion illustrations the focus is mainly on the clothing and to get a sense of texture and material. The faces are a balance of painted areas and negative space; this is normally determined by how detailed the clothing is. Less detailing usually means more painting in the faces to balance everything out.

Does your environment shape your work?

Yes, my parents live in rural Suffolk, and this has informed my colour palette as well as a shift in floral collages.

Where do you go to get your inspiration?

Colour combinations inform my work the most, this can be in anything and everything around me. I usually try to keep a digital record if I spot any I’m loving at the time.

How do you structure your day — or do you?

My work is quite spontaneous, and I often respond to my environment and mood. I usually plan my day around my coffee breaks.

Tell us about what inspired your design for our window?

Working alongside the team I’ve had the opportunity to see the new collection come to fruition. From initial design ideas to fully formed textiles, throughout this journey I’ve been able to pick my reference images and jointly decide on a concept that showcases both Fashion Illustration and my painterly flowers as a reference and nod to ‘The Rose’ moniker.
